Starting out in SEO

I started out in SEO six months ago now, completely new to the field, armed only with a confidence using computers and a little creative writing aptitude.

Search Engine Optimisation is the art of promoting business online. In simple terms, it lifts your search engine ranking, so your business gains higher ground on Google.

When you first become an SEO analyst, it is drummed into you that “content is king” and this is SO true! I thoroughly believe in an SEO approach of quality. There are various “black hat” techniques which can be used, including forum posting, social bookmarking and blog commenting and it is true that a certain degree of black hat SEO is unavoidable. I am all for the power of networking and quality content to get businesses up and running online, as these are the things which are likely to be valued in the long term. By networking, I don't just mean LinkedIn and Facebook, which undoubtedly offer huge potential for businesses, but a whole host of other networking opportunities which may not initially spring to mind. I will write more on this topic later in the blog as it is a key controversy surrounding SEO.

Search engines value quality websites over anything. There are certain shortcuts and people try to get round these in smart ways. However, algorithms are in constant flux and search engines do not disclose details of these to the general public so it is the role of the SEO analyst to keep up to date with these on behalf of their clients.

If you are a small business owner and want to get your business online, it is worthwhile consulting an SEO analyst to see what they can do for your website.
